About Us

Welcome to Country Farm Cakes, the Sussex home of the Great British traditional handmade fruit cake, where baking traditions that have been passed down family generations are as cherished today as they were in a bygone era.
As a young boy growing up on a Surrey farm, our kitchen was filled with the delicious aroma of home baking. But our family passion for good, honest and tasty food began with my Grandfather who started farming in the 1930's.

Today we make our cakes in a converted barn in the beautiful Deer Park of the Knepp Castle Estate in the heart of West Sussex. It is a journey that began in 1991 in our kitchen at home. My mother Wendy decided to sell the delicious home-made cakes that she had been baking since I was a child. She approached a local village shop with a gorgeous fruit cake and a Victoria sandwich. As her reputation spread she was soon baking flat out to meet the demand. Customers commented that her home-made cakes tasted like the cakes their own Mothers used to bake when they were young. And so Country Farm Cakes was born.

My father Cliff,  joined my mother in the busy kitchen on the family farm. It wasn't long before I was drawn back to my roots and began baking to meet the ever increasing demand for traditional local cakes. We now have a small team who share our ethos of baking classic English handmade cakes that look and taste home-made. My Mother and Father still bake every morning with other family members joining the team when we are busy.

Where do our recipes come from?
Some are old forgotten family recipes that we have rekindled, whilst others are new ones that we have spent may hours creating. Each recipe celebrates the very best in quintessentially Great British home baking. There's not a hint of anything artificial in our cakes and no nasty additives. We make our cakes with the finest locally sourced ingredients including free range eggs from the neighbouring village, English butter from Sussex, raw muscovado sugar and premium quality dried fruits... not to mention the alcohol...delicious English wine, local real ale, honey mead and cider all produced in Sussex. We bake each cake slowly in stone based ovens to allow the flavours to combine and release, before decorating it by hand. It all adds up to the most delicious, moist and luxurious fruit cake that you have probably ever tasted.
